Out of Beta: Release launch, 2.0.0

My Amtgard spellbook app has been in a public beta development state for about a month now. At time of writing, I’ve poured around 500 hours total into this project before and after that beta launch, and I’ve made a ton of improvements in that time. It’s got spell list builders, martial class calculators and information, a full spell book, review and reference materials, on-field spell tracking for backliners, incantation reference, flash cards, and more. It’s been a lot of work, but enjoyable–I’m a Wizard main, and it feels very wizard-y to make a magic tome that contains all things known throughout the lands of Amtgard!

Suffice to say–I’m out of “Beta.” To celebrate that, I’ve also revised the app logo/icon to look more like an actual cool tome of magic, based on my heraldry. (Someday I think I’ll make a physical “Sera’s Tome,” maybe put the raw source code inside?)

This is an on-going project I am going to maintain with new rules updates, and there still remains plenty for me to add or refine, but at this point, I’m comfortable calling this a complete project.

This is my passion project for Amtgard. I’m a game developer with experience ranging from indie to MMORPGs to a couple AAA action games. I plan to maintain this project indefinitely with improvements, new features, and updates with rules changes, as a way to give back to a community that has changed my life for the better.

When I started playing Amtgard, I was very unhealthily-skinny and literally struggled lifting a couple 12-packs of soda pop, and also dealt with severe germophobic OCD. Amtgard–including the amazing people I’ve met–gave me a reason to want to exercise and get stronger, and a motivation to go play outside in the dirt. And a community full of awesome people contributing to it makes me want to give back how I can, with the skills that I have!

Thank you for checking-out this passion project of mine. I hope it can help new players learn the game, be welcoming to new members of our community, and be a useful tool for any veteran players, too!

Major project feature milestones reached since start of beta:

  • Spellbook and tooltip updates to split Martial and magic user versions similarly to Rules of Play.
    • Combined with help from people testing the app and reporting any mistakes, I’m confident saying the information in the app is accurate!
  • Build and martial ability list clipboard export fixes and refinements.
  • You can set (and timestamp) a Build to active to fully verify which spell list you as a player were using for a game.
  • “View” mode for spell lists greatly improved and more fully featured.
    • These have made the view mode an actual, usable tool not only off the battlefield, but on it while playing for those with good phone cases willing to bring them onto the field! I’ve been flattered to see players doing this and using the app for keeping track of their incantations and abilities they’ve taken

Some of the updates since beta launched:

Incantations while viewing a spell list you’ve made, AND in Martial lists!

  • …And in spell lists other info has been added like strips needed, school, sorting by level, and more!
  • Martial lists meanwhile have lots of additional content from early beta, too!

Full color customization and dark/light mode to ensure better visibility on and off the field, and account for differences in people’s vision (and for fun!)

Resource pages improved:

  • Generally improved layouts, and new resource page for Magical Items.

Save and local management:

  • Exporting and importing the entire save file in the settings page.

Spell List menu updates:

  • In the spell list main menu, if you have 8 or more builds, it will now display a search bar at the top.
  • You can search by class name, as well as by your entered build name.
  • Settings has two new features under it!
    • The first is the spell list preview on each slot:
      • This is a list preview on the far right of each build in the spell list menu. This shows the number of things bought at each level. This is just to give a vague indication of the build to quickly tell them apart.
    • Bonus point tracking!
      • Spells that were bought with bonus points will be tinted a different green.
      • This tracking persists between loading spell lists.

Level tests under Reference tab, under a new heading of “Review”:

  • Currently available: Warrior 1-6, Wizard 1-2, and a couple placeholders for other classes. Later feature–testing a number of questions from all levels. Potentially also adding testing from all classes.

Miscellaneous:

  • Tons of small improvements here and there after having longtime players and paragons look over every aspect of the app.
  • In the spell book tab (the swirl), you can now search by class name as well as by spell name. This will show all spells/abilities that class gets!
  • Bug fixes here and there that have been logged elsewhere.
